Fighting the Taliban Where they are...Amid Civilians
In this morning's paper, on page 12A (above the fold!), is a story entitled "US probe finds 33 civilians kille in airstrike." The UN came up with a slightly different number, 90. US investigators counted 8 men, 3 women, 12 children and 10 "undetermined". I won't tell you what comes to my mind when I read that last part but it's pretty gruesome.
Afganistan is probably one of the poorest nations in the world. Thier main national income comes from UN aid. To add to their woes, US AC-130H gunships are blowing thier women and children to smithereens in order to engage the Taliban. I'm ashamed of my country. They don't even have meals every day there, much less a military that poses any threat to us. It's like we are the kid that takes a big stick, walks across the neighborhood to beat on a dog chained up in the junkyard. I'm not saying I'm against routing the Taliban but to destroy a village of civilians to do it is horrible. That's just going to make more people join them, a phenomonon we seem to be becoming an expert at! We go out into the world and create enemies where there were non before.
Was there some pressing need to kill this particular group of fighters? Did they have a nuclear bomb or maybe the plans to the deathstar? These people can't afford a bus ticket to Khandahar. They are backwards village yokels with no education and no way to improve their lives so they shake a stick at the US. Instead of helping them, we ship our helecopters and bombs over there and blow them into unrecognizable chunks, women and all.
Where is the America I know, land of the free and home of the brave? We have gangs of thugs right here in the US. Why not spend a billion dollars fighting the criminals here? Our gangs are way richer than their gangs! Our gangs can afford to eat out every day and drive cars and go on vacations. Their gangs are nothing more than what we have made them. They are using the weopons we gave them to fight the soviets with twenty years ago!
Send them schools, not bombs. Please please please do not kill women and children in the name of the US. Just stop it. They may be wrong but killing them isn't helping them to see the error of their ways. You are making the US look like some kind of evil empire and that's not what we are at all! We are kind and generous people who are independant and respect that in others. We assist people who need it and leave people who don't want our help alone.
Stop buying bombs and start buying solar panels.
