Vote No on Proposition (h)8
Here in California there is an upcoming vote on proposition 8. It seeks to take the right of marriage away from gay and lesbian couples. This old issue of gay rights is a perenial favorite amoung republicans and churches who both get bumper crops of cash by beating the drum of hatred and predjudice. There is nothing that brings in money better than division. Divide and conquer, that's how the republicans work.
Never mind that the experiences to-date with gay marriage in Spain, Germany, Canada and the Netherlands as well as in Mass. and now Conn. and California shows there has been zero effect of the respective governments, religions, neighbors or offspring. However, it does raise money and divert attention away from the real issues. The federal government is killing people instead of helping them in the middle east. Instead of bringing them democracy, it brought them war, unrest, and death. Litterally plane loads of US currency were taken to Iraq without the slightest plan of accounting for it. Gee, I wonder why that was?
Right now HIV could be wiped off the face of the earth if only we put everyone infected on the widely available, one pill, once a day pill that wipes out the ability of the virus to be spread through sexual contact. Instead they villify the victims. Cancer is a disease, but HIV is a punishment.
These people can live every waking moment in a world that follows every rule of science. From the moment their alarm clock wakes them in the morning till the Ambien sleeping pill puts them to bed at night they rely on the chemistry and physics and provable facts that comfort every aspect of their lives. Yet when their preacher tells them a fantasy white gowned god in a cloudy heaven wants them to cast the first stone at people who don't look or act like them, they reach for the ground.
It's time to take back our country. We the people are tired of having the wool pulled over our eyes. Right now they are running commercials to spread fear that our second graders are somehow going to be turned into homosexuals by learning that marriage can happen between any two people that love eachother. The basest tricks, vile stunts, hate mongering, everything will be pulled out of the gun case to whip up the vote of the fearful ignorant churchgoers who are right now pouring over ancient texts to search for clues to a silent god's will regarding the shape of the world. They want the past and will fight to the last tooth, the inexorable march into the light of the future.
I hope you will vote no on proposition 8. If you are not gay, it won't effect you either way. However to me and my partner of 6 years, it's very important.
